A Papua-New Guinea (PNG) flagged passenger ship/RoRo sunk yesterday in heavy seas off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea.  350 people are reported to have been on board the vessel.

Australian Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd said the MV Rabaul Queen was believed to have sunk while traveling from Kimbe to Lae, in Papua New Guinea, at around 7.30am yesterday morning, Canberra time.

“Our hearts go out to those affected by the sinking of the MV Rabaul Queen,” Mr Rudd said.

“I spoke to my counterpart, PNG Foreign Minister Ano Pala, earlier today to inform him that Australia stands ready to offer all necessary assistance.”

The Australia Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) is currently providing assistance to Papua New Guinea and eight merchant vessels remain on scene.  238 survivors have so far been recovered by five of the ships.

Australia Prime Minister Julia Gillard spoke with reporters in Melbourne yesterday:

“This is obviously a major tragedy.  Given the likely very high loss of life here, I think when this news comes to the attention of Australians around the country they will be thinking about the people of PNG as they respond to this tragedy.”

It is expected that the five ships will passage towards Lae overnight. Arrangements for transferring survivors will be made by PNG authorities.

Earlier reports of fine weather conditions have been contradicted by vessels on scene. There are currently strong north-westerly winds at 40kts, and a five-metre sea swell.

Venemaa ametkonnad informeerisid vastavalt kokkuleppele Soomet, et tuumareaktoriga varustatud laev tuleb sajaks päevaks Soome lahele aitamaks teistel alustel läbi jää liikuda, vahendas YLE.

Ligi 160 meetri pikkune laev suudab murda kuni kolme meetri paksust jääd. Alus, mida ehitati ligi 20 aastat, valmis 2007. aastal Peterburi laevatehases.

The owner and operators of a Malta registered ship have been fined a total of $1.85 million for illegally dumping oily waste and garbage into the ocean, the Baltimore Sun has reported.

Somali pirates amputated right arm of the captain of fishing vessel Shiuh Fu No 1, reported news agency Somalia Report. Pirates demand $3 million ransom for the crew of the vessel, not for the vessel, because Shiuh Fu No 1 is high and dry on a beach along Somali coast for a long time. Vessel was hijacked in December 2010 and several times was used as a mother ship for ocean raids, until finally, Shiuh Fu No 1 was beached due to storm or negligence. Crew is 13 Chinese, 12 Vietnamese and 1 Taiwanese fishermen, their whereabouts after Shiuh Fu No 1was grounded are unknown. Pirates informed mad with grief relatives about amputation, demanding the ransom. There is a hope though, that this is one more lie on behalf of the pirates, with their “business” on the slide, they seem to lie much more often than in their good old days. They said amputation was purely business, they demand money from the owner of the vessel, which in itself is just a crap, because it’s absolutely clear owner abandoned vessel and crew long time ago. Why should he pay $3 million for the crew of lost vessel, when vessels in his line of business are much more expensive than crews? Relatives are not well off people, or else hijacked fishermen wouldn’t commit themselves to near slavery on Taiwanese fishing vessels, notorious for their unbearable working and living conditions and very low wages. China, Vietnam and Taiwan obviously don’t care about their citizen tortured in pirates captivity, let alone pay for them. Pirates may amputate all limbs of all the crew, it won’t help them to get the ransom they crave for. The news are real bad and sad, the only hope is, still, that this is a typical pirates bluff.

Olgu mainintud, et platvormi kõrgus merepinnast (see osa, mida laine juba suudleb) on 20-25 meetrit.

Solar Birdie comes into dock

Solar Birdie, which ferries passengers to a golf course on one of Hong Kong's outlying islands, comes into dock

From a distance, the yellow-and-blue ferry docking at the pier resembles the scores of other vessels that hop between Hong Kong's outlying islands and the peninsula every day.
